(6/11/24) I need to edit some of my comments below. Just had a second opinion and my bone is fused okay and I will not need surgery. The specilust did agree that frequent xrays versus ultrasound is more appropriate to diagnose healing and I did not need to be in a boot as long as I was. So Dr. Self was correct saying I was healed and no surgey needed. Wanted to set the record straight. (Original comment) Dr. Self in my opinion is a competent podiatrist for basic foot issues. In my case I had a complex fracture of my 5th metatarsal (sp?). Dr. Self put me in a boot cast for 5 months. Two of which I spent on the couch at his advice. He Reviewed my progress with his ultrasound machine and assured me I was healing. After 5 months in boot cast he said I was able to rehab. Never did he suggest an xray to validate the “ultrasound” diagnosis. After 5 months in the boot cast and still in pain, I got an xray yesterday. My fracture basically has not healed and I need surgery to repair wasting six months of my life. A simple periodic xray would have exposed the complexity of the fracture and subsequent change in treatment. I really don’t understand why his process relies soley on his ultrasound machine for diagnosis when the xray is more accurate. Now I am facing a restart on my healing including surgery. Dr Self I feel is a competent podiatrist. But beware, if you have a serious fracture, his treatment process is not competent in my opinion.

Shame! Shame! It seems Dr. Self has a modus operandi. Diagnose a fractured foot and torn tendons by using a sonogram (apparently this isn’t the way to diagnosis these things) put you in a big black boot for 2 months. I heard this story from a number of his patients AND the Adventist Health Orthopedic offices in Sonora. “Don’t take one step on your foot or it may break,” he told me. So I wore that $%#@ boot for 8 weeks, sitting on the couch. Terrified to get in and out of the shower, terrified to move much.

I never had a fractured foot, I have a few spurs. He also diagnosed me with a thing called Equinus Foot, which I also don’t have. Now my muscles are atrophied, I am terribly out of shape. On a positive note, he is charming and his staff is nice.

I saw Dr Self years ago. Unfortunately I did not have insurance. He did everything in his power to give me the best care at a minimal price. I moved and have had 5 foot surgeries since seeing Dr Self. I can say with 100% certainty he was the best podiatrist I have had. Kind, understanding of everyones personal situations. I had a great experience every time. If I could go back I would but unfortunately I live to far away. If you need help with anything from a twisted ankle to a toenail go see him. He's the best in town!

Worst doctor ever! Misdiagnosed me, put me in a pneumatic boot for 2 months for a fracture that didn’t exist. I read other reviews on yelp from people who had similar experiences. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

Dr Self is far better than Bay Area doctors! He takes the time to prep custom orthotics that are far superior in quantity and comfort. I no longer have knee and back pain. Totally life changer and I highly recommend him! He’s just the best!!! He also has a very friendly and helpful staff.
