A Heartbreaking Experience for a Mother Just Trying to Take Care of Herself

As a mother of four, life is constantly busy and exhausting. My youngest is now almost two years old, and ever since his birth, I’ve found myself stretched thin, struggling to find time for my own health. A friend noticed and suggested I start with something as simple as a dental cleaning. She highly recommended Brian Dental Office in Laguna Hills, praising not just their care but their understanding and kindness. She mentioned the front office staff would even watch my baby during my check-up. For a mother who often feels overwhelmed, this thought was deeply touching.

When I first visited, Hannah, the office manager, the entire front office staff, and Dr. Ly welcomed me warmly. They were kind, professional, and patient, allowing me to take a rare moment to focus on me. For that, I was grateful beyond words. I trusted them enough to move my entire family—my children and even my husband—to this office.

However, my trust was shaken during my husband’s first visit. He experienced a communication issue that left him in pain mid-procedure, undermining the trust we’d both placed in the practice. He suggested we find another dentist, but my positive experiences with the staff led me to give them another chance.

In hindsight, I regret that decision.

On my most recent visit for a routine cleaning, I again trusted the front office staff, as I always had, to watch my baby. In the past, I had expressed concerns and told them I felt bad when baby cried, they had reassured me that caring for my child was something they were happy to do, and they’d earned my trust. As my baby began to cry in the waiting area this time, I sat in the chair, hearing Dr. Kim instruct the front office to handle it. Like any mother, hearing my baby cry was already difficult, and I found myself second-guessing whether I should have even brought him that day. I trusted the staff to keep him safe and comforted, but I felt torn.

Then, Dr. Kim entered the room and said something that shocked me: “Next time, don’t bring your baby if you can’t find a sitter.”

I felt blindsided, shocked, and humiliated. I was unable to respond with my mouth full, and he continued, asking, “Can you hear me?” in a tone that felt condescending. In that moment, I felt as though my vulnerability was being met with disdain rather than care. If he or the staff had concerns about watching my baby, they could have simply waited to speak with me after the procedure to discuss it privately and professionally. That approach would have shown understanding and respect. And I would have respected that and agreed with them. But instead, Dr. Kim’s handling of the situation felt harsh and unkind, making me feel unwelcome and unsupported.

Afterward, Dr. Kim didn’t apologize; instead, he lectured me on the liability of the front office watching my child. When I began to tear up, he didn’t offer comfort—only justification for his actions. His eventual apology felt hollow.

As mothers, we often feel judged for our children’s behavior in public spaces, but I never expected that kind of judgment in a place where patients should feel cared for. Dr. Kim’s words left a lasting sting.

Since then, I’ve found another dental office in the area that truly values patient-centered care. Without sharing my negative experience at Brian Dental, I asked about their policy on bringing young children. The staff reassured me that they welcome mothers with young children and even offered a private room for added comfort. They said, “It’s good for toddlers to get familiar with the dental office. And it’s okay if they cry.” I almost teared up. This response left me feeling relieved and supported.

Leaving Brian Dental breaks my heart because the front office staff have always been wonderful. But no amount of kindness from them can make up for the disrespect I experienced from Dr. Kim. I cannot recommend this office to any mother or anyone seeking true patient-centered care.

Awesome place!! I was in need of special care due my breast cancer treatment and all the staff was amazing. Both offices have the best staff and great service. I didn’t have any issue to make an appointment for my service and I was highly satisfied! They also have a cutie area for kids that is just amazing.

After doing a little research on which dentist were covered by my insurance plan in my area, I reached out to Brian Dental for a new patient exam and cleaning. I showed up a few minutes before my appointment and they greeted me very welcomely, took me right back and got my x-rays quickly taken care of. My dental cleaning was far more “enjoyable” than I can remember them being in the past. My last cleaning from my previous dentist had me almost tearing out the armrest in the chair. After letting my technician know this, he said he even went a little harder on my scaling, which I just could not believe! I thanked him numerous times and I actually look forward to my next visit!

I have been a patient of Dr Ly for many years and have always found her to be highly professional, considerate and kind. When I walk in the door I am always greeted with friendliness by Hannah and the other staff. The office is very clean and the dental equipment and x-ray technology is first rate.
Dr Ly is an excellent dentist and it is a pleasure to go to her office. Also her fees are very reasonable. I highly recommend the whole Brian Dental experience.

This was my second time coming to Brian Dental Care in Laguna Hills for teeth cleaning and both times I had a very positive experience with the front desk staff (very friendly and efficient) and with the teeth cleaning by Dr. Kim. I like the fact that he takes a rather conservative approach with his suggestions for some additional services and procedures where he takes time to clearly explain why they are needed. He is soft-spoken and easy to communicate with, and I appreciate his consultative style where I felt as a partner in making decisions in regard to my dental care. I am looking forward to my next appointment there and would recommend this dental office to family and friends.

My experience was 11/10. I like how thorough they are with everything from just taking your xrays to consultation. They really provide an excellent, detailed care for their patients. You can tell that they uphold their standards very high. I got a cleaning and regular check up done my first time and im already amazed! Will recommend it to my fam and friends!
